Gurdwara Sri Chowa Sahib

Description:

Gurdwara Sri Chowa Sahib is a historic Sikh shrine located near Kabuli Darwaza of Rohtas Fort in Jhelum District, Punjab, Pakistan. The site is associated with Guru Nanak Dev Ji, who is traditionally believed to have stopped here during his travels after coming from Tilla Jogian.

According to Sikh tradition, when Guru Nanak arrived at this place, the area was uninhabited. It is believed that he struck the ground with his staff and a spring of water emerged. Because a natural spring is known as a chowa, the site came to be known as Chowa Sahib. The spring remains one of the defining features of the shrine and continues to be remembered as a sacred sign of Guru Nanak’s presence.

The present Gurdwara stands in a setting of great historical and natural beauty, with Rohtas Fort on one side and the nearby river on the other. The current building is traditionally associated with the period of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, under whose command it was constructed in 1834. Over time, the shrine became an important part of the Sikh heritage of the Rohtas region and remains closely connected with the memory of Guru Nanak’s travels through Punjab.
