Lahore Fort, commonly known as Shahi Qila, is one of the most important historic landmarks in Pakistan and forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage property Fort and Shalamar Gardens in Lahore. Located at the northern edge of the Walled City, the fort occupies a site that has been used for centuries and was repeatedly rebuilt and expanded under different rulers.
The fort reached its greatest architectural development during the Mughal period, particularly under Emperor Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan. Its surviving monuments reflect the evolution of Mughal architecture from red sandstone and brick construction to increasingly elaborate marble work, mosaics, decorative inlays and Persian-inspired ornamentation. Among its most notable structures are the Sheesh Mahal, Naulakha Pavilion, Diwan-i-Khas and the monumental gateways and courtyards.
Lahore Fort later became part of the political and cultural landscape of the Sikh Empire under Maharaja Ranjit Singh, before passing into British control in the nineteenth century. This layered history makes the fort an important place for understanding not only Mughal Lahore, but also the Sikh and colonial periods that followed.
