The Shrine of Hazrat Mian Mir is one of Lahore’s most respected Sufi sites. Mian Mir was a prominent seventeenth-century saint of the Qadiri Sufi order who spent much of his life in Lahore and became known for his devotion, humility and distance from political power. He was also the spiritual guide of Mughal prince Dara Shikoh, who later wrote about his life and teachings.
Mian Mir holds a particularly important place in the shared spiritual history of Muslims and Sikhs. Sikh tradition remembers a close relationship between Mian Mir and Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the Fifth Sikh Guru. Later Sikh accounts also preserve the widely cherished tradition that Guru Arjan invited Mian Mir to lay the foundation stone of Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar. While historians debate the documentary evidence for this episode, the tradition remains an enduring symbol of respect and spiritual connection between the Sikh and Muslim communities.
After his death in 1635, Mian Mir was buried in Lahore, where his mausoleum developed into an important place of pilgrimage. The shrine continued to be respected during the Sikh period; historical accounts record that Maharaja Ranjit Singh visited the site and supported its preservation. Today, the dargah remains an active spiritual centre visited by devotees from different religious backgrounds.
