Gurdwara Mal Ji Sahib

Description:

Gurdwara Mal Ji Sahib is one of the historic Sikh shrines of Nankana Sahib and is associated with the childhood of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The site takes its name from the mal tree, a large shady tree traditionally connected with an important event from Guru Nanak’s early life.

According to Sikh tradition, Rai Bular, the local ruler of Talwandi, once saw the young Guru Nanak sleeping beneath a mal tree. He was struck by the belief that the tree’s shade remained over Guru Nanak even as the sun moved across the sky. Another traditional version tells that a cobra spread its hood over the sleeping Guru to protect his face from the sun.

Together with other childhood traditions connected with Nankana Sahib, this episode is remembered as one of the moments that strengthened Rai Bular’s belief in the extraordinary spiritual nature of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Rai Bular later became closely associated with the early history of Guru Nanak and is remembered with great respect in Sikh tradition.
