Gurdwara Beri Sahib

Description:

Gurdwara Beri Sahib, also known as Baba Beri or Gurdwara Babe Di Ber, is a historic Sikh shrine associated with Guru Nanak Dev Ji. According to Sikh tradition, Guru Nanak stayed at this site during his travels beneath a beri, or berry tree, which still stands within the Gurdwara complex today. The shrine takes its name from this sacred tree, remembered as a living connection with the Guru’s presence in Sialkot.

The site is also associated with Guru Nanak’s meeting with Hamza Ghaus, a respected Sufi saint of Sialkot. This encounter is remembered as one of the many moments in Guru Nanak’s life in which he engaged with spiritual seekers from different religious traditions. The Gurdwara that later developed around the site was built by Natha Singh and included a garden, a pool, a well and residential rooms for visiting pilgrims.

The shrine suffered damage during unrest following the Babri Masjid dispute in 1992, when part of the historic complex was destroyed. It was later renovated during the 2010s and reopened to pilgrims, allowing Sikh Sangat to once again visit one of Sialkot’s most important sites connected with Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

Why Visit

For Sikh pilgrims, Gurdwara Beri Sahib offers a meaningful connection with Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s travels and with his tradition of dialogue across religious and spiritual communities. The surviving beri tree gives the site a particularly strong sense of continuity with the history remembered there.

Visiting the shrine also offers pilgrims the opportunity to explore an important chapter of Sikh heritage in Sialkot and to reflect on Guru Nanak’s message of spiritual understanding, humility and engagement with people of different traditions.

Punjasahib Travel & Tours includes Gurdwara Beri Sahib in selected Sikh Yatra itineraries, allowing pilgrims to experience this historic shrine and connect with the wider Sikh heritage associated with Guru Nanak Dev Ji across Pakistan.
