Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur, also known as Kartarpur Sahib, is one of the most sacred sites in Sikhism and is closely connected with the final years of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. After completing his extensive travels, Guru Nanak settled in Kartarpur in 1522 and spent the remaining years of his life there until 1539. During this period, he established a community centred on prayer, honest work, service and sharing with others.
Kartarpur became an important early centre of Sikh life. Guru Nanak worked the land, gathered the Sangat, encouraged daily kirtan and strengthened practices that reflected the principles of Naam Japna, Kirat Karni and Vand Chhakna. It was also here that he appointed Bhai Lehna Ji, later Guru Angad Dev Ji, as his successor, ensuring the continuation of the Sikh Guru tradition.
The present Gurdwara complex stands on the historic site associated with Guru Nanak’s final years and has been expanded and restored over time. Today, it is one of Pakistan’s major Sikh pilgrimage destinations and forms the heart of the Kartarpur Corridor, which opened in 2019 to allow Sikh pilgrims from India to visit the shrine directly. Pakistan’s Evacuee Trust Property Board lists Darbar Sahib Kartarpur among the country’s major functional Gurdwaras.
