Gurdwara Dera Sahib is one of the most important Sikh shrines in Lahore and is closely associated with the martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the Fifth Sikh Guru. The shrine stands near Lahore Fort and the historic Walled City, in an area deeply connected with Sikh history. Guru Arjan Dev Ji was martyred in Lahore in 1606, and the site became a place of remembrance and devotion for the Sikh community.
Guru Arjan Dev Ji holds a central place in Sikh history. He compiled the Adi Granth, the sacred scripture that later became the foundation of the Guru Granth Sahib, and played a major role in strengthening the Sikh community during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. His martyrdom is remembered as one of the defining events in Sikh history and as a symbol of faith, sacrifice and steadfast devotion.
Today, Gurdwara Dera Sahib remains an active pilgrimage site and hosts major gatherings connected with the remembrance of Guru Arjan Dev Ji. Sikh pilgrims from Pakistan, India and other countries continue to visit the shrine to offer prayers, listen to Gurbani and take part in commemorative events. In 2026, the main ceremonies of the Guru Arjan Dev Ji Jor Mela were again held at Gurdwara Dera Sahib in Lahore.
