According to Sikh tradition, Guru Nanak stayed at this site during his travels beneath a beri, or berry tree, which still stands within the Gurdwara complex today. The shrine takes its name from this sacred tree, remembered as a living connection with the Guru\u2019s presence in <strong class=\"x7amdea\">Sialkot<\/strong>.<\/p><p class=\"x1yc453h xma8rkl xgoqxah xutxfr x1fie51u xgyxj25 x1xobyvs x1elgs31 x1fv8qjw xcy5tzr x1ht4adc xnvauns x1c2l018 x14l7nz5 xuw7688 x1pjt2rx x160d6zm xrxpjvj\" dir=\"ltr\">The site is also associated with Guru Nanak\u2019s meeting with <strong class=\"x7amdea\">Hamza Ghaus<\/strong>, a respected Sufi saint of Sialkot. This encounter is remembered as one of the many moments in Guru Nanak\u2019s life in which he engaged with spiritual seekers from different religious traditions. The Gurdwara that later developed around the site was built by <strong class=\"x7amdea\">Natha Singh<\/strong> and included a garden, a pool, a well and residential rooms for visiting pilgrims.<\/p><p class=\"x1yc453h xma8rkl xgoqxah xutxfr x1fie51u xgyxj25 x1xobyvs x1elgs31 x1fv8qjw xcy5tzr x1ht4adc xnvauns x1c2l018 x14l7nz5 xuw7688 x1pjt2rx x160d6zm xrxpjvj\" dir=\"ltr\">The shrine suffered damage during unrest following the Babri Masjid dispute in 1992, when part of the historic complex was destroyed.
